How do I connect the WinEEG Computer with the PsyTask Computer?
WinEEG and PsyTask need to run on two separate computers. Both computers need to be connected by means of a serial cable.
Modern computers do not have a serial port anymore, so we will need a "USB-Serial-Converter" for each computer. A "USB-Serial-Converter" will appear as "COM Port" on the computer that then will be used by WinEEG and PsyTask, respectively.
There are two possible approaches:
a) select COM port of USB-Serial-converters in WinEEG and PsyTask
b) modify COM port of USB-Serial converters to match default settings in WinEEG and PsyTask.
1) Modifying the COM Port in Windows:
We recommend to modify COM port settings in device manager to values lower than 8. On some computers we have seen problems with higher port numbers. To do that, goto device manager, find section with COM ports (something like "Ports (COM & LPT)"), expand ('+') and double-click on USB-serial converter. There, select section "Port Settings", click on "Advanced". Then, do two things: Move both sliders to the very left and change the COM Port Number to a lower value. Most of the time, COM 2 is available. If it is not but you know that nothing else in the system is using it, select it. Ignore the error message.
2) Modifying COM Port in WinEEG and PsyTask
WinEEG: Menu Settings -> Equipment Parameters... -> Parameters of Synchronization Port
PsyTask: Click on "Modify Synchronization Parameters".
If you are setting up the computers newly, first make sure that the COM ports are below 8 (according to (1)), then adapt the settings in WinEEG and PsyTask according to (2).
Note: the USB-Serial converters must be connected always to the same USB connectors- otherwise the system will assign a different COM port and the settings have to be adapted (either method 1 or 2)
