The goal of the workshop is to teach attendees how to improve their diagnostic and treatment tools by using a newly emerged technology of Quantitative EEG, event related potentials and neurotherapy. Attendees will learn about neuromarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as depression, anxiety, stroke, PTSD and others. Attendees are welcome to bring cases of their own patients to be discussed in the course.

After attending the course you will be able to:
- to identify and make use of biomarkers for the various disorders
- to select effective (non-pharmacological) treatment protocols
- to record and analyse QEEGs and ERPs by yourself and know how to make use of biomarkers

At the end of the course you will be able to record and analyse QEEGs and ERPs by yourself and know how to make use of biomarkers in order to make a more precise diagnosis and to treat your patients more effectively.
This is what you will learn
Each day will consist of two parts, theory and practice:
- Morning: Lectures on theory, practicing with software on EEG files taken from the HBI reference database.
- Afternoon: Working with hardware/software, recording your own EEGs and analyzing EEG files recorded during the workshop.
For maximum learning efficiency, we strongly recommend to read the book “Quantitative EEG, event related potentials and neurotherapy” by Jury D. Kropotov prior to the course.
Equipment for Practicum
Attendees will be supplied with equipment for working in groups of two or three persons and with an educational software package and EEG files from the HBI (Human Brain Index) reference database. The hardware and the reference database are approved as medical devices.
The QEEG equipment, caps, electrodes, supplies, etc. will be supplied by us. If you already have compatible QEEG equipment, you are welcome to bring it along.
Short final exam
At the end of the course there will be a short multiple-choice-test.
After the course you will receive a HBImed certificate of completion/attendance.
Participants must have paid the tuition fee, signed in and out each day, attended the entire seminar and completed an evaluation, in order to receive a certificate of completion/attendance. All questionaries have to be returned completed.
Topics: Introduction and Methods of assessing neuromarkers
- Concept of the neuromarker and it´s relation to concepts of biomarker and endophenotype
- Steps of introducing neuromarkers into clinical practice
- Psychometrics and neuropsychological assessment
- fMRI and local blood flow
- PET and neurotransmitters
- Clinical and quantitative EEG
- Event related potentials
Educational objective: Understand the foundations of methods for assessing neuromarkers in clinical practice, namely:
- Basic concepts of neuropsychology, fMRI and psychometrics
- Methods of clinical EEG, QEEG and event related potentials
Procedure: Lecture (Power Point presentation is supplied)
- Recording a 19-cahnnel EEG in resting state (eyes open and eyes closed conditions, during hyperventilation)
- Visual inspection of the EEG recording
- Artifact correction
- Automated spike detection
- to place electrodes on the patients´ head according to 10-20 system
- to start, to end and to store an EEG recording
- to be able to use the built-in user database to manage the datasets
- to remontage the recording.
Procedure: The attendees will be divided into groups. Each group will be supplied with hardware/software for recording and analysis. One of the attendees will serve as a subject (to be recorded) while the others will do recording.

- Slow and infra-slow oscillations in fMRI and electrophysiology
- Mechanisms of generation of alpha, beta and theta EEG rhythms
- Independent component analysis in EEG
- Visualization methods in EEG: LORETA and sLORETA
- Test-retest reliability of QEEG parameters
- Heritability of EEG parameters
- Age dependence of QEEG parameters
Educational objectives: Understand neurophysiolgical mechanisms of corticalself-reguation, including
- EEG infraslow rhythms
- EEG theta, alpha and beta rhythms
- Fourier analysis for studying rhythms. Spectra and coherence.
- Test-retest reliability, heritability an age dependence of EE rhythms.
- Spectral and coherence analysis of EEG recorded on the first day
- Comparing spectral characteristics of recorded EEG with the normative data of the HBI reference database.
- To remontage the recording into the HBI database montage
- To perform spectral analysis
- To compare the results of the analysis with the HBI database
- To make interpretations of the results.
Procedure: The attendees will be divided into groups. Each group will be supplied with software for analysis. The analysis of EEG of the subjects recorded on the first day will be done. Spectra, theta/beta ratios, asymmetry maps for EEGs recorded on the first day will be computed and analyzed.

- Functional meaning of some independent components
- Sensory and attentional systems and their functional indexes. Dyslexia and autism
- ERP independent components of the executive system. ADHD and schizophrenia

- Test-retest reliability of ERP Parameters

- To learn about structural and functional organization of the brain systems.
- To learn about ERP indexes of information flow in these systems.
- To learn about independent components of mismatch negativity, P3b, P3 novelty, N2 and P3 NOGO waves
- Recording of EEG in Visual Continuous Performance Task (VCPT)
- Preprocessing of EEG
- Computing ERPs by averaging technique
- Comparison of behavioral parameters (omission and commission errors, latencies and variances of responses) with the normative data of the HBI database
- Comparison of ERPs and ERP independent components with the HBI database
- To use Psytask software for presenting tasks provided with the HBI database
- To record EEG in one of the tasks (such as VCPT)
- To compute ERPs and behavioral parameters
- To analyze ERPs visually and to make maps of ERPs waves, and
- to compare ERPs and ERP independent components with the HBI reference database
Procedure: The attendees will be divided into groups. Each group will be supplied with hardware/software for recording and analysis. One of the attendees will serve as a subject (to be recorded) while the others will do recording. An EEG in the VCPT task will be recorded and analyzed.

- Autistic spectrum disorders
- To learn of how to incorporate the learned methodology in the clinical practice.
- To learn about neuromarkers in psychiatric and neurological conditions.
Topics: Neuromarkers of information flow within the brain (part 2)
- Affective system and its functional neuromarkers. Depression.
- Stress system of the brain and its relation to anxiety and PTSD
- Memory systems of the brain and their dysfunction in dementia
- Functional neuromarkers of stroke and traumatic brain injury
- to use the HBI reference database for constructing protocols of neurotherapy.
Procedure: The attendees will be divided into groups. Each group will be supplied with an HBI database. The records made during the first days will be analyzed and neurofeedback protocols for peak performance will be suggested. Several records of patients of the HBI database will be analyzed.
